A new format of play awaits players at the October Snooker Monthly Mug tournament set for October 6-12 this year at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC). Snooker captain Firoz Yusufali told the ‘Daily News’ in Dar es Salaam on Wednesday that preparations are on top gear and the event will be held as planned.
He said that the players will battle it out in the single frame in the six-day event. “Everything is going well … we’re all looking forward to getting a new challenge at the single frame event,” he said.
The single frame makes the event more interesting and is expected to be very challenging to players as it will be the first time the monthly mug is played in that format. The event usually used to be played over the best-of three or five frames format.
Yusufali said he is happy to announce that the event has already secured sponsorship of snooker and golf player Rupesh Soni. “We hope to get a good turn-up as many players have been waiting for the competition for three months,” he said.
“The players will battle it out in Division A and B categories.” Last week Yusufali told this paper that the tournament could not be held in the last three months due to the several reasons, including religious holidays.
The DGC Cargostars tournament was last held in June this year and upcoming Abbas Yusufali kept his fine form to win the Division A title.
He had to overcome a stiff competition from Khuzema Kilango of Annadil Burhani Club to seal a 3-1 frame victory in the thrilling best-of-five frame final.
Yusufali was playing his first ever Division A final and went on to record a nerveshredding victory. He was delighted to add another title to his cabinet, which includes two Division B titles that he won last year and is now looking forward to clinching the October Mug.
