Jjagwe takes over troubled table tennis

Robert Jjaggwe was elected new Uganda Table Tennis Association chairman in a chaotic assembly at Kololo SS on Saturday.

Jjaggwe beat Robert Matovu by 29-19 votes in the assembly that also saw Monica Kisakye (secretary) and Keturah Aguti (treasurer) elected unopposed. Former chairman Denis Galabuzi opted to stand down.

But despite all this, one of Uganda’s top sports federations might end up not making the registration cut after failing to get the basics as per the new National Council of Sports (NCS) Act 2014.

NCS Assistant General Secretary David Katende made the revelation at the assembly, which he went on to describe as a “big joke”.

The association, who had their account frozen due to inactivity, and was only reopened two months ago, had no financial statement.

There was no executive report while the chairman’s report was read from notes that he had written on pieces of paper. The acting secretary read wrong minutes to the delegates with Galabuzi the first to attack him over that.

“I am totally disappointed about all this. This is the August House and it deserves more respect than this. The annual assembly is all about accountability to the members but it is unfortunate that there isn’t any kind of report, no minutes of the last assembly, no calendar and you even fail to make the executive report? There is totally nothing. What have you been doing in office?” wondered Katende.
