The public has been exhorted to get rid of wrong perceptions about bikers in their communities. The call was made in Dar es Salaam by the Chairman of Mombasa Coasts bikers, Ally Fedha, when addressing journalists on a campaign to eradicate polio in East Africa.
Fedha, who was accompanied by other 20 bikers who travelled all the way from Mombasa to create polio awareness, clarified that bikers can use their abilities to spread messages on different issues.
He added that some people do not recognise biking as a sport, instead they regard it as a hooligans’ game. He insisted that biking can be used as the most important way of delivering messages on health issues.
On the campaign to eradicate polio, Fedha said they have been educating different communities all the way from Mombasa to Dar es Salaam.
“We have spent about two days from Mombasa to here (Dar es Salaam) talking to different groups of people to create awareness on polio and the adventure has proved to be successful,” he said.
Fedha said the campaign also aims to solicit funds to support the Mtwapa Rotary Club located in Mombasa. The Mombasa to Dar biking delegation was hosted at Subway Restaurant by Bahari Rotary Chairman Ally Abdulah who appreciated the bikers’ initiative.
Abdulah, who donated cash to Mtwapa Rotary Club, also urged the public to support the war against polio. He noted that polio is among the diseases that can easily be wiped out of East Africa and initiatives made by the bikers need full support.
“We, as Bahari Rotary, understand how this disease affects our communities and still there is a need to combat it effectively. So through campaigns like this polio can be kicked out,” said Abdulah.
