KDF lIft National Boxing league title in seven years

Kenya Defence Forces won the National Boxing League title for the first time in seven years.

The soldiers collected unassailable 111 points as the curtains came down on the fifth and final leg of the National Boxing League at Madison Square Garden in Nakuru over the weekend.

The soldiers showed their intent to win the title by sending 10 boxers in the finals where four of them won their bouts as six lost to collect a total of 22 points.

Defending champions Kenya Police followed in second place with 18 points ahead of Kenya Prisons, who collected nine points. Nakuru were third on six points, Coast Combined (three points), Kenyatta National Hospital (three points), Nanyuki (two points), Nyanza Combined (two points) and Administration Police with one point.

As a result, Police finished as the league runners up winners on a cumulative score of 97 points ahead of Kenya Prisons with 57 points. Coast Combined were fourth on 24 points followed by Nyanza Combined (18), Nakuru (10), Kenyatta National Hospital (8), Central
Combined (5) while Administration Police and Nanyuki trailed with two points each.

Speaking after receiving the overall trophy from Nakuru Governor Kinuthia Mbugua who sponsored three-day tournament, KDF Team Manager Ben Maingi said: “It has been sheer hard work and determination besides high sense of discipline on our players that made us win the cup.”

Boxing Association of Kenya President John Kameta, who thanked Mbugua for the sponsorship said: “This is a good gesture by Governor Mbugua, this is the only county boss who is supporting boxing I appeal is for others to follow suit in support of the youth.

In one of the matches of the super heavyweight bout, Daniel Shitsia of Kenya Prisons knocked out Fredrick Ramogi pf KDF in the third round
after a fierce exchange of jabs in the three rounds.
