Tanga anglers nicknamed ‘Lady Dianna’ won the Tanga Open fishing competition after hauling 35.1kg of Sail Fish at the Tanga Yacht Club on the first day over the weekend.
Tanga Cement Public Limited Company (TCPLC), producers of Simba Cement, has dished out 6.2m/- to sponsor the two-day contest. Tanga Cement Managing Director Reinhardt Swart said the company is proud to be associated with the event for the sixth year in a row.
Other sports competitions sponsored by TCPLC this year include the Kilimanjaro Marathon held in Moshi on March 2 and the Tanga Motor Rally that took place in September.
Swart said that the fishing competition is the most attractive social event in Tanga as it attracts people from all walks of life, including business communities, TCPLC employees and other individuals from within and outside the region.
“The competition is another sporting event we have been sponsoring for the sixth time to promote sports in the region,” Swart said.
He further said that the participating anglers are from various areas of the country, including Arusha and Tanga, with 11 boats taking part.
“This time around we are lucky to have an exclusive boat with lady members who have displayed their fishing talent and added value to this event organised by Tanga Yacht Club,” he said.
Asif Murtaza, one of the anglers from Tanga, told reporters that this year’s competition was well organized, but the most challenging factor is illegal fishing.
He called upon Tanga authorities and the private sector to join their efforts in the ongoing fight against dynamite fishing in the coastal areas, especially Tanga. Fans converged at the Tanga Yacht Club to see a variety of fish hooked by the participating anglers.
