This year’s Karatu 10 kilometre race will be held on December 20, it has been confirmed. Event coordinator Meta Petro said yesterday the deadline for confirming participation is December 10.
The former international athlete said the race is open and is hopeful it will draw a bigger turnout than the previous competitions. Apart from the men’s 10km, there will also be the 5km and 2.5km races for women and primary school pupils respectively.
“We invite entries from across the country to the open race and we’re optimistic that it will be more competitive as we expect many top athletes will take part,” said Petro.
Some of the star athletes earmarked for the races are defending champion Dickson Marwa, Fabian Joseph, Alphonce Felix, Andrew Sambu and Elia Dau.
Others are Mary Naali, Jackline Sambu in the women’s category. The Karatu Sports festival also involves a 60km cycling race, football, netball and volleyball competitions.
It is organised by the Filbert Bayi Foundation (FBF) and sponsored by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) through the Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC).
