The Vintage Snooker tournament entered its second day at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) on Tuesday night with Nitin Somani, San Tosh and Zoeb Hakimjee sailing through to the second round.
Upanga Sports Club’s Somani beat DGC’s Mukeshi Joshi in a tough and exciting single frame match to go through. In other matches, Legion Club’s Jamal Awadhi lost to host Tosh, while Hakimjee triumphed over Joseph Masawe in the all-DGC affair.
The trio joined DGC captain Firoz Yusufali and Upanga Sports Club’s Chuni Modessa, who advanced into the second round on Monday.
Yusufali pulled an impressive win over his stablemate Nuri Isaajee, while Modessa beat his club-mate Rohit Kotak. All winners were awarded mugs donated by the event’s sponsor, the DGC chairman Dioniz Malinzi.
The tournament that started on Monday and ends on December 8 is part of celebrations to mark the 53rd Tanganyika Independence anniversary.
Thirty players from three Dar es Salaam-based clubs are taking part in the twoweek event that is strictly for players aged 50 years and above. Six of the players are from Upanga Sports Club; two are from Legion Club, while 22 are from hosts DGC.
They are battling it out in the single frame in the early round, but from the quarter, semis and final they will compete in the best of three frames.
Yusufali said he is happy with the level of the competition and thanked all those who have turned up for the event which is important for cementing friendship and bolstering health
