Mwanza frisbee team ‘Tossers’ taught their opponents how to play the beautiful game after winning their first three matches in the opening day of Matema Beach Festival in Kyela, Mbeya.

Tossers started the tournament impressively after counted their first win against Dar es Salaam’s iP Sports by 9-0. The winners were leading by 6-0 at half time.

In the second half, Mwanza upped the tempo and wasted no time as they quickly added three goals to seal the victory. Youngster Nestory Chiwembo scored three goals, Justin Matao and only lady in the event Rose Urio scored two goals each, while Haji Mbaraka and team captain Musa Victor scored a goal apiece.

Musa told the ‘Sunday News’ shortly after the match that experience helped them a great deal to win the game. “We scored quick goals that unsettled our opponents and we knew it will be difficult for them to re-organise,” he said.

Mwanza is heartbeat of the game in the country, as they started to practice it for the last ten years, with a bit of experience at international level.

Tossers also whitewashed Morogoro B 9-0 and thrashed Malawi’s Kamuzu Academy 12-3. The iP captain Omary Chapa said that they lost their first game to a better team.

“They are a good team and really made it difficult for us to get something out of the game but will do better in the remaining matches,” he said.

The iP quickly got back into the picture as they amended their mistakes to record an emphatic 9-0 win against Moro B and 9-3 over Moro A. Malawi Kamuzu A also did well in their first two matches, winning 7-6 against Moro A before thrashing Malawi B 6-2. However, they could not stop Tossers who put up a stunning performance to post a 12-3 against the Malawians.

Kamuzu team Coach Gary Wambeek said: “We are happy to get this opportunity to be part of this festival, this is new game in Malawi.

“The tournament like this will help our youth to get experience and learn from others as we are keen to develop the sport,” he said. Six teams are playing in the league basis, in which four teams will advance into the semi-finals on Sunday.

Traditional canoe and bao players will battle it out on Sunday, which is the final day of the annual festival organised by iMage Professional Sports (iP Sports) of Dar es Salaam.
