The iMage Professional Sports Club (iP Sports Club) of Dar es Salaam plans to conduct a frisbee coaching course in Dar es Salaam with the aim to promote the game at the grassroots.
iP Sports Club Secretary Abdallah Chapa told the ‘Daily News’ in the city yesterday that they intend to conduct a national frisbee coaching course in the near future.
“We’re determined to promote the game from the grassroots, but nothing can be achieved without coaches,” he said.
He said that frisbee is among the least popular games in the country that needs to be promoted. Chapa said very few regions play the game at the moment and efforts are being made to introduce it in other parts of the country.
He said that there is a good future for the sport if Tanzania will take it seriously by introducing it to the young generation. “Frisbee is very easy to learn to play.
It can also be played anywhere, including beaches, so a ground is not a problem at all,” Chapa said. He added: “Since there is no strict venue for the game it is very easy to spread it provided we invest in training coaches.”
Chapa said that the seminar will be open to all wishing to become frisbee coaches. He said his club will give the best performers at the course a chance to coach youths in different schools across the country that will enter the programme.
“We will work hand to hand with those who will attend the course to conduct frisbee coaching programmes in schools,” he said.
The iP Sports Club organises the annual Matema Beach Festival in Kyela, Mbeya. It also introduced the frisbee youth team that took part in the recent festival in Matema.
The one-year-old team finished runners-up to champions Tossers of Mwanza who have about ten years in the game. Mwanza introduced the game about ten years ago but due to the limited teams playing frisbee in the country they mostly compete in Kenya and Uganda.
Frisbee’s future looks bright as currently Morogoro, Dar es Salaam and Arusha play the game. Chapa also said plans are underway to officially register the Tanzania Frisbee Association so that it can be affiliated to international bodies and allow Tanzanians to showcase their skills globally.
