Minister for Information, Youth , Culture and Sports Fenella Mukangara has challenged newly appointed members of the National Sports Council (NSC) to be creative in seeking new sources of revenues.
She also challenged the body to handle disputes in sports associations and clubs in order to achieve success in the sports sector in the country.Mukangara said this in Dar es Salaam on Saturday, when officially unveiling the newly appointed members of the NSC.
Minister Mukangara appointed 13 members of the body on December 18th, last year, in which Dioniz Malinzi was re-appointed as the NSC Chairman.
The minister said time is up for NSC to find alternative means to raise enough funds that would meet the budget to support sports projects and programmes in the country.
She suggested that the NSC should possibly think of establishing a sports shop to help the body generate income. The minister took the opportunity to remind the body to play its role effectively and ensure that the country was free from regular conflicts in sports.
She also insisted that her ministry will continue with efforts to come up with a new sports policy in a bid to develop, promote and revive various sports in the country, as well as to help the government to derive a special strategy to organise sports activities at grassroots level, where talents are in abundance.
Initially, the NSC boss, Malinzi requested the minister to place the office of Registrar of Sports Associations and Clubs under the NSC jurisdiction, saying, the move will to some extent give the body more teeth to bite in solving conflicts in the country.
Malinzi suggested it was appropriate for NSC to have a specific legal instrument which will handle complaints from sports associations and clubs.
He said such body should have one representative from each club or sports associations that have been registered legally. Established by the Parliament Act of 1967, the NSC functions are to develop, promote and control all forms of amateur sports on a national basis in conjunction with voluntary amateur sports organisations or associations.
The NSC is required to provide, among others, training, aid to national associations or organisations, playing fields and other facilities, sports equipment and accelerate development of sports.
Apart from Malinzi, other members of the NSC include Jamal Rwambow, Alex Mgongolwa , Jenifer Mmasi Shang’a, Zainab Mbiro, Zainab Vullu, Adam Mayingu, and Crescentius Magori. Others are Zacharia Hanspoppe, Mohamed Bawazir and John Ndumbaro.
Malinzi was first appointed the NSC chairman in 2013 by the former minister of Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Emmanuel Nchimbi. He took over the office from Idd Kipingu, whose tenure in office had expired.
