Uganda: Boxers cry over gym hire

The hiring out of the national boxing gym to a private operator has disturbed the performance of the national boxing team, the Bombers, according to Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) secretary Simon Barigo.

“It is a psychological torture for us. Physically everything looks normal but our operations have been drastically affected,” observed a downcast Barigo.

The independence era gym is now a fitness centre where members of the public pay for a workout for better health.

Under the new arrangement UBF has to officially seek approval of National Council of Sports (NCS) in writing to access the facility. The measure is a new move as NCS seeks to generate funds for their operations.

Though plausible to the Lugogo authorities, UBF officials feel that they have been chased away from the facility.

“We are not comfortable. But we have tried to avoid confrontation as much as possible. Hopefully we shall agree a common in future,” said Barigo.
