John ‘The Beast’ Mugabi insists that he is a responsible father despite abandoning his daughter for 28 years in Uganda.

The legendary boxer came out on Tuesday to explain the 28-year break between him and his daughter Maureen Mugabi after suffering a backlash from Ugandans.

Father and daughter finally met last Sunday after New Vision re-united the two after an appeal published on February 28.

“I am really very sorry. I feel bad that this happened, it a bad chapter in my life,” said Mugabi.

“I am still a good father. My prayer is that one-day I can build a castle so that my children come together. It is my wish to come back home for good,” he said.

Mugabi revealed that he nearly lost love for Uganda after he was conned of colossal sums of money in an attempt to build a house in Muyenga.

With those bad memories, he said, he lost contact with his people.

A complex life story continues. Mugabi said he parted with Maureen’s mother after years when he returned only to find that she was married to another man and had five children.

His attempt to take Maureen to London was also frustrated by a hostile stepmother. Maureen Mugabi grew up with Mugabi’s mother, in Kampala, who later passed on in 2002. Mugabi never returned home for his mother’s funeral.

“I had my mum’s phone contact but unfortunately I lost it,” said Mugabi.

New Vision has received some calls claiming that Mugabi fathered other children in Uganda. But the legendary boxer insists that he has only two other daughters in America and Australia.

Mugabi who was among the boxers bestowed with a Life Time Award in Kampala last Friday is still having a feel of Uganda.

The boxer is recording the last moments of a documentary EKA (a Champions Tale) in Uganda. The documentary also features Mugabi’s life in Australia and US.

After meeting Prime Minister Rukahana Rugunda, Mugabi received special recognition in parliament on Tuesday.
