Sports officials in Kilimanjaro region have been urged to go out scouting for new talents instead of staying in office running ‘business as usual.’
Athletics Tanzania (AT) President, Anthony Mtaka, who is also the new Hai District Commissioner (DC), said there is so much potential in the villages and if well-nurtured Tanzania would have great sports persons in the near future.
He rued the opportunities lost by sports officers in district councils and regional levels staying in office doing nothing instead of going to the field, leading to loss of talents, especially in rural areas.
The DC said by its resources, Tanzania was supposed to be ranking very high in sports internationally, but because they are not well tapped, the country remains one of the poorest in the field.
Speaking when he was handed over the DC’s office by Novatus Makunga, who has been shifted to Moshi on the same capacity, he said AT is determined to use the sport as a means to create employment, hence urged stakeholders to collectively work toward that end.
Mtaka, who moves to Hai from Mvomero district in Morogoro region, said he was happy that most athletes hail from northern Tanzania, so those in his district and the region at large were at a better position to excel.
