The East African netball championships continued at the Gymkhana Grounds here with Mainland’s JKT Mbweni ladies beating hosts KVZ 36-27 in a hotly contested match.

The game was the first of the three fixtures that took place earlier on the day, kicking off at 8:30am.

Khadija Msafiri scored 20 points and Nelly Anyingisye contributed 16 as Mbweni overcame a strong resistance from KVZ to win the thrilling encounter, which saw Fatma Abdallah and Zainab Shaibu score 18 and nine points for the Isles side.

Kenyan side MOICT edged out KCCA of Uganda with a 37- 35 win in a closely fought match that got underway at 09:45 at the same venue.

In the men’s category, Polisi thrashed Sogea 53-14 in a onesided game that kicked off at 11:30am. The winners dominated the game from the word go and scored almost at will.

Amiri Muhidin scored 37 points with Saleh Abbas chipping in with 16 points. Mainland are represented in the tournament by Mbweni JKT, JKT Ruvu and Immigration, while hosts Zanzibar are represented by Mafunzo, JKU and Zimamoto.

The event involves both women and men’s teams. Uganda’s National Insurance Corporation (NIC) are the defending champions.

They won the title when the tournament was held in Tanzania Mainland last year.
