Tanzania snooker ace Arjun Lavingia’s hopes of lifting his first trophy in African Snooker Championship once again ended in vain after he collapsed in the quarter-finals in Marrakech, Morocco on Thursday night Lavingia has to wait for another year to see if his dream of lifting the first African Snooker Championship title will become a reality.

It was the third time for Lavingia to see his campaign ending in the quarter-finals in four outings since 2010, when he made his debut in the continental championship in Cairo, Egypt.

In-form Arjun had a tense day at Hotel Eden Andalou on Thursday night when he had to play two tough matches, including a fourth round tie against Egyptian Alaa Hager before he advanced to the quarter-final tie against hosts Chaouki Yousfi. Arjun won his fourth round match after seeing off Hager by a 4-3 victory in the best of seven thrilling match.

However, he was no match to Moroccan Yousfi after crushing to a humiliating 5-1 defeat in the best of nine frames match and his dreams were utterly shattered. The youngsters will now have to wait until 2014, when the tournament will be hosted by Tanzania for the first time. Arjun booked his place in the fourth round after seeing off Saleem Moosa of Mauritius 4-1 in the best of seven frames match on Wednesday.

The youngster did the same at the just-ended Africa Six Reds Championship held at the same venue last week. The Tanzania youngster qualified for the knockout stage after leading his Group A by winning all his four preliminary matches, including a win against Africa Six Reds champion Ahmed Galal from Egypt, who finished behind him. However, they both went through the group stages.

Galal also went out in the quarter-finals after losing 5-1 at the hands of his compatriot Karim Elabd. Khalid Belaied of Libya met Karim Elabd (Egypt) in the first semi-final last night while Yousfi faced South African Peter Francisco for a place in the final also scheduled for last night. The tournament, which rolled off on June 18, wound up on Friday in Marrakech.

It started with the Africa Red Six, whose winner Galal and runner-up Moroccan Chaouki will represent Africa in the World Sangsom Six Reds in Bangkok, Thailand, while the African champion will represent the continent in the World Championship to be held in Latvia later this year. Countries taking part in the event include Tanzania, South Africa, Egypt, Libya, Sudan, Mauritius, Mozambique, Algeria, Tunisia and hosts Morocco.
