The veteran boxing coach cut out the work load for the 80 boxers boxers in the on-going non-residential training at Lugogo on Friday.
Katende made the appeal after Nkozi Clays director, Yusuf Nsibambi donated an assortment of foodstuffs to boxers in the camp.
In a bid to pick the best boxers for the forthcoming All Africa Games and the Olympic qualifiers, Uganda Boxing Federation (UBF) has summoned the biggest team of 80 for training.
“We summoned a big pool to give a wider opportunity of selecting the best boxers. I am very happy of the good response. But the best boxers have to prove their best for consideration,” he said.
“There are people out there who have put trust in us to represent Uganda. We need to work hard,” Katende told the boxers.
Top boxers in the non-residential camp that started last week will be considered for various engagements assignments in the elite, junior and youth categories.
According to Katende, the squad will be trimmed down to size after trials.
The elite boxers are scheduled to feature in the Africa Boxing Confederation (ABC) championship in Morrocco on July 30 to August 8.
Other engagements awaiting boxers include the World Junior Championship in Samoa September and the World Championships due in Qatar in October.
