The National Inter-primary School Games (UMITASHUMTA) opened at Butimba Primary School Ground early this week. Netball matches are played at Butimba Prison.
In the opening boys’ football match on Monday, hosts Mwanza won 2-1 against Morogoro. Mwanza goals were scored by Simon Boniphace, who netted a brace, while Morogoro’s consolation came through Paschal John.
Geita won 1-0 against Simiyu, Dar es Salaam thrashed Singida 5-0, Ruvuma edged Mtwara 1-0 and Tanga triumphed by the same margin over Katavi.
According to football coordinator Safari Nyerere, the matches are played regularly and the tournament is very competitive. He said the matches are officiated by David Albert, Fadhili Ramadhan, Charles Wambura, Haji Vemba and Kelvin Richard from Alliance Football Academy.
Volleyball coordinator Venance Mzaga has urged the UMITASHUMTA board to repair the pitches which are in bad shape. He noted that some of the teams lack volleyball gear like shoes and jerseys and even a section of the coaches are not conversant with the rules governing the sport.
Umpires for the volleyball matches are Emmanuel Majengo, Rajab Ramadhan and Simon Noah. Handball coordinator Waziri Lwimbo said the tournament is good and the youth are displaying their talent.
The matches are officiated by Ally Mussa and Lucas Lwambano. In the boys’ handball, Singida beat Katavi 12-11 and Morogoro pulverised Shinyanga 12-4, while in the girls’ series, Mbeya won 10-2 against Dodoma. In netball, Dar es Salaam thrashed Singida 21-19.
