Underdogs Chui caused a major upset at the ongoing Dar es Salaam Regional Volleyball League when they recorded their first win at the National Indoor Stadium over the last weekend.
Chui beat fifth-placed Twalipo 3-0 sets in a thrilling second leg match to collect their first points in the league that is organised by the Dar es Salaam Regional Volleyball Association (DAREVA).
Prior to that Chui had failed to secure a point since the league, which is played over two legs, started in February, this year as they were beaten in all their matches.
However, they are still at the bottom of the men’s eightteam league table with three points. Chui’s sweet win over Twalipo ensured they don’t finish the league which ends on August 1 empty-handed. Chui had the previous day suffered a 3-0 defeat to youthful Makongo Secondary School.
That was the second win of the week for Makongo who triumphed 3-1 over Future in an earlier game. Things seem to be unfavourable for Twalipo and may not finish among the top four to be able to qualify for the play-offs.
After the shocking defeat to Chui, Twalipo failed to turn up for their match against Jeshi Stars and the organisers opt to award their opponents a 3-0 victory.
In another match, Tanzania Prisons thrashed Future 3-0 to extend their lead to 37 points from 13 matches. Prisons arch-rivals Jeshi Stars are in second place on 32 points, JKT are third with 23 points. They are followed by Police Marine who have 15 points, while Twalipo are fifth.
The weekend’s double win helped Makongo lifted to sixth place from seventh with 13 points to swap places with Future who have 10 points. In the women category, Prisons also extended their lead to 17 points after a 3-0 victory over Makongo.
Four women’s teams are taking part in the league. They are Prisons, secondplaced Jeshi Stars (9), JKT (6) and Makongo (1).
