Journalists should uphold this solidarity

A good section of journalists opened a new chapter in Dar es Salaam yesterday when they gathered at Leader’s Club for one particular mission.

This is none other than to raise fund in support of journalists in need of medical attention. The fund raiser was undertaken in style – car washing.

Members of the media fraternity, irrespective of the position held in the society, gathered for a humble job. Dozens vehicles, motorcycles and tri-cycles were washed with some payment in return.

What a wonderful ingenuity. Perhaps the significance of the unforgettable event can be viewed in three dimensions. One, it proves creation of a new culture of care for each other.

Secondly, it demonstrates the humility (car washing) among journalists when it comes to life-saving, and thirdly it ascertains the unity among journalists which can also be emulated by other social groups.

The strong message conveyed by the engagement journalists in raising fund for the needy is cross cutting. Again it opens ‘door’ for other well-wishers to join hand and perpetuate the spirit of togetherness.

Over-and-above, the effective and positive use of social media has made this a reality. Journalists informed each other about this event and responded quickly.

We strongly support the initiative and pray that this kind of collective attentiveness is extended to other issues of national interest.

It is time to sit together and set a common agenda for the prosperity of the nation. For example, a larger section of the community is gradually reverting to illiteracy.

If this and other major issues are given similar attention by the media, obviously the intended objectives will be met in collaboration with other authorities.

Usually a good idea may originate from a single person and once implemented regularly it becomes a tradition. We pray that the strength of mind demonstrated by the journalists is extended countrywide.

Under the initiative different challenges will be addressed with some added advantage of unity and harmony. Keep it up journalists.
