The Tanzania Chess Association (TCA) Interim Committee Chairman, Geoffrey Mwanyika, said Kasparov will land in Dar es Salaam on Monday and will attend a special corporate networking dinner organized by the Tanzania Chess Foundation (TCF).

“The dinner is aimed at promoting chess in schools under a project dubbed ‘Chess for Grades’,” Mwanyika said in a statement.

“Apart from gracing the dinner which will be officiated by the Minister for Information, Youth, Culture, and Sports Fenella Mukangara and attended by CEOs and heads of different organizations in the country, Kasparov will also meet heads of various schools and students and chess players at Shaaban Robert Secondary School,” he added.

‘Chess for Grades’ is TCF’s initiative dedicated to promote the game in schools as a way of enhancing students’ intellectual levels as well as enabling the country to have professional players who can participate and win in international championships.

Kasparov became the youngest ever undisputed World Chess Champion in 1985 at the age of 22 by defeating then-champion Anatoly Karpov.

He was ranked number one chess player in the world for a record 20 years and he famously defeated IBM’s Deep Blue supercomputer in a series of chess matches in 1996. Kasparov also holds records for consecutive tournament victories and Chess Oscars.

Recently the World Chess Federation (FIDE) officially approved TCA’s membership to the federation.

According to Mwanyika, TCA has the vision to introduce the game in schools so that it should benefit the students in their academic results.
