Tanga Dhow Festival participants praise sponsors for making the race possible last Sunday.
The event, which took place at Kigombe Village, in Muheza District, Tanga Region consisted of 150 participants, who formed 30 teams. Juma Mgeni emerged winner for this year competition, which was sponsored by the Zantel mobile phone service providers.
Speaking at the event, the Muheza Constituency Special Seats Member of the Parliament, Amina Mwidau, said that Zantel’s sponsorship helped motivate participants towards participating in the annul event.
The Chief Commercial Officer for Zantel, Sajid Khan, said the company recognizes the role played by the dhow games in creating employment.
This sport, he added is amongst the games that can represent the country at international competitions meet. “Zantel will continue to support this game simply because of its importance to the country.
This is the kind of game that is very importance to both youth and adults, since they all participate effectively in it,” Khan said.
Normally the competition takes place in Muheza or Pangani districts, where there is never a shortage of participants. Its no wonder this year’s winner, Mgeni, asked Zantel to continue supporting dhow competition, since it is the kind of sport that can take the country to international levels.
