JKT Mbweni reinforced their claim for the East Africa Netball Club Championship title when they humbled Kenya’s Ministry of Information, Communications and Technology (MOICT) 41-37 in a thrilling women’s match at the National Stadium in Dar es Salaam.
Trailing 19-21 at the breather Mbweni piled up pressure and pushed MOICT to the receiving end in the last two quarters of the game that put spectators on their toes throughout. Mbweni opened their campaign by thrashing Uganda Police 42-35 on Sunday.
Hosts Tanzania Mainland are represented by only two women’s teams – JKT Mbweni and Magereza of Morogoro — in the tournament. They have also fielded three men’s teams which are Kaza Moyo, Mangaya and Arusha City. Other teams are from Kenya, Uganda and Zanzibar.
Uganda Police recovered in time and rectified their mistakes when they beat Zanzibar’s Mafunzo 37-34 at the same venue.
The two teams battled neck to neck and the victors narrowly led 19-18 at half time. In the men’s series, Kenya Prisons mercilessly humiliated Mangaya 73-3 in a lopsided match which saw the Kenyans lead 50-3 at the interval.
The teams are placed in two groups in both categories. National Insurance Corporation (NIC) and Prisons from Uganda, Kenya Prisons and Zanzibar JKU are in the women’s Group A.
Group B comprises JKT Mbweni, Uganda’s Police and Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA), MOICT and Mafunzo Zanzibar. In men’s Group A are Kenya Prisons, JKU, Mangaya and Arusha City. Group B consists of Ganec Kenya, Zanzibar Police, Kaza Moyo and Kampala University.
