About 50 participants have registered to compete at a cycling race to be held at Tunduma, Momba District in Mbeya region on Wednesday.

The event has been organised by Image Profession Sports Club (IP Sports Club) of Dar es Salaam in a bid to promote sports in the country.

Event organiser Abdallah Chapa told the ‘Daily News’ in the city yesterday that preparations for the race are in top gear. He said that the participants will battle it out in a 60-kilometre race which will pass through different Tunduma streets.

“Our major aim of organising the event is to sensitise and promote cycling races in the Southern Highland Zone,” Chapa said. He said an official of the National Cycling Association, Saidi Kengele, will be among the technical experts at the race.

Chapa said the Momba event will be the second to be organised by his club after the Makete race, which was successfully held on March 16, this year.

He added that they plan to organise more races to attract many people to engage in cycling competitions and identify talent that will represent their zones at the International Race to Matema to be held in Rungwe and Kyela districts, Mbeya region later this year.

“We’ve decided to organise district races to involve a good number of local cycling enthusiasts to the sport, in addition to identifying and promoting talent,” Chapa said.

The IP Sports Club organises the International Race to Matema which was held for the first time last year.

“Apart from promoting cycling, we also want to use the Race to Matema to advertise Mbeya-based tourist attractions like Kitulo National Park, Bridge of God and Matema Beach,” Chapa said.
