Lake Zone on Friday emerged the overall winners of the 20th edition of the Inter-Primary Schools games (UMITASHUMTA) after outshining other 20 zones in the games which came to close at the Kibaha Education Centre grounds on Friday.

A total of 11 zones participated in the games which involved a total of 1500 pupils. They competed in various sports disciplines such as netball, soccer, handball, volleyball, athletics and games for athletes with special needs.
Highlands Zone emerged the second overall winners of the games while Dar es Salaam, Eastern and Western zones tied on points in the third position.
The champions were presented with a trophy by the Deputy Minister for Information, Youth, Culture and Sports, Juma Nkamia, who urged the Councils Directors in the new regions to ensure every school has a sports ground.
He also demanded that sports venues which have been abandoned and used other activities other sports to be recovered immediately and used for sports activities. Nkamia said many schools in the country lack playing grounds a fact that make it difficult for them to conduct sports activities as required.
The deputy minister insisted that sports are crucial in development of any nation, saying the government will continue to provide conducive environment for sports development. He said Inter-schools games (Primary and Secondary) are the sources of identifying talented athletes and called for much more efforts to make the games vibrant and sustainable.
