Tanzania swimming team had mixture of success and failure in the ongoing 20th edition of Commonwealth games in Glasgow, Scotland as Mariam Foum excelled in Heat 2 of women’s 50m freestyle held at Tollcross International Swimming Centre.
After settling in the second spot in the heat 1 on Thursday, Foum failed to cruise into the finals of women 50m Breaststroke style after faltering in the event’s semi final.
In the 50m freestyle heat 2 on Friday, Foum was line up against Evelina Afoa from Samoa, Rache Nation (Antigua and Barbuda), Onika George (Guyana), Aminath Shajan (Maldives) and her compatriot Magdalena Moshi.
Moshi failed to qualify into the semi final after finishing fifth, leaving her colleague Foum, Afoa and Wall who finished in first, second and third spots cruising into the semis, which were held later on Friday.
Foum who finished in the first spot in the freestyle heat 50m with a time of 29.16, while Afoa clocked 29.25 a different of +0.09.e Wall time was 29.35 and George who took the fourth spot clocked 29.55.
Tanzanian Magdalena Moshi who failed to emulate her colleague achievement by completing the heat out of top three to settle in the fifth position. She clocked 29.97 ahead of Shajan from Maldives who settled in the sixth position.
In men’s category Freestyle Heat will take place tomorrow, whereby Tanzanian Hilal Hilal who failed to shine in the Men’s 50m Butterfly style will be trying his luck againt in Heat 5 at Tollcross Centre.
In men’s 200m freestyle which was also held yesterday Amaar Ghadiyali continue to shine after finishing second in Heat 1 behind Pakistan’s Israr Hussain, who took the first spot by clocking 2:06.05. Ghadiyali clocked 2:08.94 and the third spot went to Nisar Ahmed from Pakistan and the final for the event was scheduled to be held later on the day.
Meanwhile in boxing Tanzania was set to begin hunt for medals late evening yesterday, with the ‘Team Tanzania’ captain Selemani Kidunda taking into the ring against Nigerian Kehinde Ademuyiyiwa in the light welter weight (69 kg) at Secc (Hall 4A). Today afternoon, Nasser Mafuru will face Ghanaian Jessie Lartey and later his colleague Fabian Gaudensi will battle it out against Stevin Thanki from Malawi.
Good news for Tanzania is that Mohamed Hakimu, who was expected to be in the ring yesterday, has been give a bye in the 81 kg bout and will now face India’s Sumit Sangwan in the round of 16. Another Tanzanian fighter Ezra Paul got a bye in Fly weight and cruised into round of 16 whereby he will face winner of the bout between Zambian Christopher Katanga and Ruairi Dalton of Northern Ireland.
Commonwealth Games which commenced on July 23 will reach its climax on August 3. England are leading in the medals standing after collecting six gold, seven silver and four bronze followed by Australia with five gold, three silver and seven bronze. Hosts Scotland grabbed four gold, three silver and bronze. Australia and Scotland are in the second and third spots respectively.
