The late Harold Obunga, or ‘Schetza’, as he was popularly known, was a heavyweight champion in the dreaded ‘Hit Squad’ of the 1980s that represented Kenya in international championships that included the fourth All African Games in Nairobi in 1987 and the 1988 Olympics in Seoul, South Korea.

This event was launched last year with the intention of reviving boxing, whose standards are dwindling and also to sensitise the youth of Makadara where Obunga lived and the entire Eastlands community on the importance of sports in promoting a healthy lifestyle, self-discipline, fight against drug abuse and runaway crime.

A group of boxers have formed a CBO called BTR (Beyond The Ring) and teamed up with the organisers of this event as they have these issues as a common interest for the day boxers. The first event was a great success and saw the revival of boxing from then both within the county and country.

“We have invited Kenya Boxing Association (KBA) top brass including chairman John Kameta to grace the occasion,” Geno Obunga, one of the organisers told FeverPitch.
