The Tanzania Olympic Committee (TOC) has amended its constitution to bar non-existing executive committee members from contesting presidential elections.
TOC members, who are leaders of sports associations affiliated to the Olympics Solidarity, discussed and approved the amendments of the constitution during their general assembly held in Morogoro over the weekend.
TOC President Gulam Rashid said the amendment would help in electing into power leaders who have enough experience and inside knowledge on TOC.
Gulam revealed that the amendment, which prohibits those who are not executive committee members from contesting the TOC’s top position, is a directive of the International Olympic Committee (IOC), which follows the same rule.
The general assembly members also introduced a new post of an executive office attendant, who will be reporting to the TOC’s secretary general.
Gulam said the executive office attendant will be tasked with coordinating TOC meetings as well as overseeing daily official communications. He said the TOC is now looking on how to raise funds in order to employ the new officer before they can announce the vacancy.
Gulam also urged the government to certify the current international antidoping law as directed by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA).
Meanwhile, TOC awarded former runner Mwinga Mwanjala a certificate and 500,000/- in cash for a good 17 years of service. Others who were awarded certificates are former 400-meters runner Peter Mwita and Henry Tandau, who served as members of the TOC executive committee for several years.
Apart from amending TOC constitution, the members also approved calendar for the year 2015, received treasurer’s 2013 audit report and also received and approved TOC’s 2015 drafted budget.
