Kalembwani, Makueni shine at Kalamba Sports Festival

Kalembwani “A” and Makueni Stars won the men and women’s volleyball titles during the annual Kalamba Sports Festival held at Kalamba Primary School in Makueni County over the weekend.

volleyballKalembwani “A” was undoubtedly the best women’s volleyball side during the two-day competition, after outclassing Makindu 3-1 (25-20, 25-7, 13-25 and 25-19) in a one-sided final watched by hundreds of local sports fans.

Makueni, in the meantime, beat Sultan Hamud in 3-0 straight sets of 25-18, 25-13 and 25-12 to bag the men’s title.

In football, Ngukuni Stars dethroned holders Sultan Hamud 6-5 on post-match penalties to lift the men’s overall trophy.

JUNIOR ROAD RACE

The two teams had settled for a 1-1 stalemate by the end of regulation time. Jonathan Mulei scored for Ngukuni Stars as Marsden Mwambu netted for Sultan Hamud.

In other selected results Mwongeli Daudi won the 4km junior road race with Syekau Kimali and Faith Muthyakya settling for the second and third places respectively.

The men’s 7km race was won by Alex Maingi. Tony Kimeu and Mumo Wambua followed in that order.

All the winning sides were awarded cash prizes, uniforms, volleyball nets and trophies.

“All the boys and girls who have competed here today have outstanding talent. Please keep on working hard and training consistently and something good will come out of it,” the event’s Chief guest Waithaka Kioni, who is also the Kenya Volleyball Federation (KVF) Chairman, advised the youngsters.

Event patron David Kilundo revealed that plans are underway to expand the annual event, so as to include a cultural gala next year.
