The National Sports Council (NSC) Chairman, Dioniz Malinzi has acknowledged that the standard of sports in the country was unsatisfactory at all levels and that something must be done in order to retain the lost old glory.
Malinzi made this remarks at a joint meeting involving chairmen, secretaries and members of the Sports Councils from Tanzania Mainland and Zanzibar, which was held at the Bwawani Hotel here.
The re-appointed NSC boss said the sports sector in the country is now dominated by self interests by few individuals, the scourge he said must be discouraged by all means.
“We need to address this problem seriously to ensure that sports standard is improved in the country,” he said. Delegates to the meeting, which was opened by the Isles Minister for Information, Culture, Tourism and Sports, Saidi Ali Mbarouk, discussed various issues including coming up with plans to improve collaboration among sports associations in the country.
They also discussed ways to avoid frequent conflicts in sports sector. In his opening speech, Mbarouk said that the state of sports is not good due to the prevailing disputes between Zanzibar and Tanzania Mainland sports associations.
He said that frequent conflicts emerge especially when it comes to the issue of selecting national team players as well as the distribution of funds.
