St Mary’s College Kisubi emerged top of the Enterprise Challenge secondary school competition, after making a winning presentation before judges at Kabira Country Club on Wednesday.
The winning students included David Busingye, Paul Wabwire, Alvin Agume, Jonathan Osiya and Pascal Nkera who worked hand in hand with their mentor Ronnie Muyanja to emerge winners.
Each school fielded a team of five students (aged 14-19) who presented a 5-minute pitch to a panel of four judges that included British Council Country Director Peter Brown, Irene Mutumba, Nassir Katuramu and Seanice Lojede.
Each of the four school groups were required to make presentation as a ‘marketing company’ to a football club with a specific brief on how to explore ways to attract young fans and in particular young female fans.
They were asked to prepare a business plan showing how they would attract more young fans to experience a match live at the stadium and how they could use the club assets to generate more interest and enthusiasm.
Presenting as the ‘Turf’ marketing team the winners presented short and long term targets, suggested additional online tickets, linking celebrities to their club and advertising both online and offline and plans of managing risks among others en-route to being announced winners.
The Challenge attracted students from Kibuli Secondary School, St. Lawrence, Horizon Campus, and Wakiso School for the Deaf and winners St. Mary’s Kisubi who were crowned by British High Commissioner to Uganda Alison Blackburne.
The Enterprise Challenge is a pilot programme which uses football to engage young people in business enterprise and is a new strand of the British Council and the Premier League’s hugely successful Premier Skills project.
It uses football to teach young people the basic principles of business and self-employment, providing in-depth lessons in specific areas like entrepreneurship, marketing and finance, and communication.
