Prisons men’s team have overtaken Jeshi Stars at the top of the ongoing Dar es Salaam Regional Volleyball League table.
The tournament, which is held at the weekend at Uhuru Primary School courts in the city, is organised by the Dar es Salaam Regional Volleyball Association (DAREVA).
Eight men and four women’s teams are taking part in the league whose first leg started at the end of last month. Prisons are leading the men’s category after winning their two games they have played so far.
They beat JKT 3-0 sets to collect the all important three points, before edging tough Jeshi Stars 3-2 to lead the league with five points. The defeat saw Jeshi Stars trail the leader after collecting four points from two matches.
DAREVA official Nassor Shariff said one has to win 3-0 or 3-1 sets to be awarded three points, but if the scoreline is 3-2 the winning team earns two points, while a point goes to the loser.
In another match, Police Marine collected two points following a 3-2 victory over Twalipo to settle in third place with four points like Jeshi, but have lost more sets than the latter.
Future have three points from a single match, followed by Police Marine and JKT with two points each. Makongo have a point, while Chui are bottom with no point.
In the women category, Tanzania Prisons are leading by three points after beating Jeshi Stars in the opening game. Other teams in the category are Makongo and JKT, who are yet to test the league.
Shariff said the league, which started on February 28, is being held over two legs and will end in August. “The first leg ends on April 18 and the second leg is set for May 9 to August 1,” he said, adding that they are yet to secure a sponsor for the league.
