Prominent squash players in Dar es Salaam have been challenged to make sure the game is played at national level.

The challenge was given to the Interim Squash Tanzania leading members by the National Sports Council (NSC) Chairman, Dioniz Malinzi, when addressing participants of the just-ended Alliance Insurance Uhuru Squash Open at the Dar es Salaam Gymkhana Club (DGC) over the weekend.

He urged the interim committee’s chairman, Col Ameen Kasmiri to make sure that people in Dodoma, Singida, Mwanza, Kagera, Morogoro and all other regions in the country participate in the tournament next year and not just Dar es Salaam.

Malinzi, who is also the DGC chairman asked squash section captain Akil Hirji to think above the DGC and popularise squash in the country.

He said since former colonialists had settled in most of the regions around the country, there is a possibility that there are squash courts in these areas and people can get the chance to play the game.

“As for the DGC, we are ready and prepared to support the squash section. We have allowed juniors to become members of the club at anytime free of charge. We’ll give them proper courts and they can come to practise. It’s only for you (the squash section) to provide a coach,” he said.

“As a club we’ll assist you to pay the cost. We need a proper coach to teach our children to play squash.” Malinzi praised the game of squash as being very good for keeping fit and will help local children remain alert not only on squash courts but throughout their lives.

He also expressed his interest in the upcoming national squash elections next month, where permanent members for Squash Tanzania will be chosen.
