Nairobi County plans to develop sports infrastructure

More upcoming boxers in Nairobi County will have a chance to pursue their careers following the county’s efforts to build sports infrastructures.

This was disclosed yesterday when the county, handed over the Robert Wangila boxing ring to Kenya Professional Boxing Commission chairman Reuben Ndolo at Nairobi’s Pumwani Social Hall.

During the event presided over by Nairobi Deputy County Governor Jonathan Mueke who stressed the county’s commitment to promoting sports.

Ndolo said he will renovate all social halls to improve the standards of boxing in the country.

“This is good for boxing. We are starting to feel the fruits of good management. It will go along way to improve the standards of boxing. With all social halls in Nairobi getting a facelift and boxing rings, it will be a bonus to the County government of Nairobi.

More bouts

“I want more boxers to come out and help us revamp the sport. We will organise more bouts to give them the opportunity to utilise their talents to generate income to the youth in Nairobi,” said Ndolo, who is also the former Commonwealth Boxing Council President.

Meanwhile, The Zambian National Boxing Federation presents two national teams against their Kenyan counterparts in separate international friendly assignments ahead of Commonwealth Games and World Youth Olympics.

The Central Africans take on The Hit Squad at Madison Square Garden in Nakuru on May 31.

Boxing Association of Kenya President John Kameta said it would be the second crucial tournament the federation is involving the National Boxing Team after a successful trip in the Lion International Boxing Championships in Colombo, last month.
