Ronald Kalete and Didah Amoding stood out as Uganda overwhelmed Kenya in the Uganda Open Darts Championship on Sunday.
Kalete who last tested victory in the regional event in 2009, returned to the podium after a 4-2 victory over Geoffrey Onen in all-Ugandan singles finals in Kireka, Wakiso Distict.
For the first time, Uganda ended Kenya’s dominance in the annual event in both women and men brackets – a feat Uganda Darts Association (UDA) secretary David Tabaro attributed to a resurgence of talent.
USPA player of the year Amoding saw off Kenya’s Rosemary Wanjoi 4-2 in the women’s category.
To reach the final, Kalete defeated Patrick Opolot 4-2 while Onen beat Kenya’s Benjamin Gaimoi with a similar margin.
In doubles, Geoffrey Onen/Patrick Oching saw off Jimmy Anecho/Saul Mukasa 4-3 while Amoding/ Deborah Ibenu stopped Sarah Kitoogo/Sheila Birabwa. The event preceded the Obai Open due in Soroti on October 10-11.
