The Mapinduzi Cup 2014 local organising committee had not cleared some bills amounting to 130m/- it owes various local hotels in Unguja and Pemba after the tournament ended early this month.
The committee’s Secretary General, Khamis Abdallah said that the amount arose from accommodation and meals at the hotels that hosted competing teams in the tournament held from January 1 to 13, this year.
“We operated at a loss and are facing the 130m/- debt to clear,” he said, adding that it was the first time for the tournament to run at a loss.
Giving the breakdown, Abdallah said that the committee chairman Mohamed Raza granted them 71m/- which should be refunded. He further said Kilimani’s Island View is demanding 10.9m/-, Garden Lodge (7.7m/-), Bwawani Hotel (6.6m/-). He said in total Pemba hotels debts amount to 30m/-.
He said the total amount spent during the tournament was 375m/-, while the committee only managed to collected 128m/-, out of which only 9m/- was fetched from Pemba.
Abdallah said in an effort to offset the debt, they are contacting all institutions that pledged to finance the event to fulfil their promises.
“We’ve also reported the matter to the government for further action,” he said.
Mapinduzi Cup attracted 12 teams including four from Kenya and Uganda. Uganda’s KCC beat Simba 1-0 in the final match to lift the trophy.
